TRIBUTE TO BILL
Architectures (1998), we discover a trio with two Europeans
talents, Louis Moutin on drums and Daniele Mencarelli on bass, and an
original repertoire. Composed to emphasize the virtuosity and the
lyricism of each soloist, Giovanni Mirabassi’s music combines
harmonic rigour with clearness of melodies. His play is meticulous,
nimble and technical at the same time. In reference, critics cite
Kenny Barron, Enrico Pieranunzi, Ahmad Djamal, Keith Jarrett...
Giovanni affirms his admiration for Bill Evans or Art Tatum,
classical influences are also present. « I’ve
composed tunes thinking of Bach or Chopin ». « On
each track of the album, we strongly feel the love of lyricism « à
l’italienne ». The swing furia flexible and sensual.
The romantic passion of a long phrase which he unrolls as if he were
out of breath, almost in apnea. He’s a musician who knows how
to make his keyboard sing with the art of narration. A real sense of
melodic drama and rhythmical staging… Where does the charm of
such a dense and intense music come from ? Undoubtedly there
floats a kind of melancholic mist. A form of suffering without
sadness, never pathetic, undoubtedly metaphysical. A certain idea,
young and new, of romanticism.
